Creative artists unite.

As part of our mission to foster and develop new theatrical work, Theatre Collaborative initiated CoLab: Play Development. Each year, we develop new work created by a community of facilitating artists. Artists collaborate to devise original material to present to audiences.

How Does CoLab Work?

This program is a year long program designed to invite individual artists from the artistic community into a facilitated devising environment where they can work together to generate original theatrical work.

The purpose of this program is to offer individual artists the chance to work in a collaborative setting, with other artists who are passionate about the craft of devised theatre.

16 artists will be selected from a Mock Devising Session.

All Artists 18+ can apply! No devising experience necessary! Artists that are confident and ready to explore a physical movement, text devising, and collaborative creation certainly ready for CoLab.

Program Outline

CoLab encourages the facilitating artists to freely explore acting, scene work, movement, stage combat, music, composition, visual artistry, and dance.

The artists will come together over the course of 8 weeks to create original performance work. A typical rehearsal schedule includes 1-2 days a week, for 4 hours each.

Sometimes we begin from scratch and sometimes we devise using a specific prompt. This group will work together to generate material which will be performed in a workshop style setting.

These pieces are then shared in a workshop style setting. After the workshop, generated material then has the potential to be developed into a full length piece by Theatre Collaborative.

CoLab has been a unique physical experience for me. The initial stripped down movements later progressing into something more vivid and dynamic is not only thrilling to participate in, but also unforgettable. In this space, everyone is a collaborator as the entire company pools their multiple talents together to create something magical. I have been with CoLab for a couple of years now and I could not be more happy and proud to be involved with such a cutting edge group.

Going into CoLab, I was looking for a movement/dance group that would bring me out of my comfort zone. I certainly found that here. As an artist, I have had great confidence in my acting and singing abilities, but have been self conscious about how I look when I move or dance. In CoLab, beauty is not the goal, which is not always the goal in dance either, instead, it is about listening to your artist gut and have pride in whatever you come up with. It is about being comfortable with oneself to become the best collaborating artist you can. It was hard work and my mind was stretched for sure. It was a unique experience I was happy to have taken part in it.
